Enhancing the quality of life for elderly residents through improved living conditions in Brussels
Since 1856, the Petites Sœurs des Pauvres have provided a lifeline for elderly individuals living in poverty. Their mission is rooted in offering not only physical care, but emotional and spiritual support to seniors who often face isolation and economic hardship. In their Brussels residence, nestled in the historic Marolles district, the sisters create a home where 96 elderly residents—many without family or financial means—can live in dignity.
The community offers more than shelter. Residents have access to medical care, physical therapy, occupational workshops, and a variety of social activities designed to maintain autonomy and encourage engagement. With the support of a dedicated staff and a network of volunteers, the sisters aim to offer an enriching and respectful environment where each person is treated like family.
The Marolles home is part of an international network of Little Sisters of the Poor who serve across the globe. In Brussels alone, their impact reaches beyond the walls of their residence, as they advocate for the elderly and demonstrate the importance of care with compassion. Enhancing Daily Comfort with Window Blinds
To improve daily living conditions, the organization recently undertook a project to install window blinds in residents’ rooms. These blinds offer crucial light control, privacy, and a sense of comfort—especially in rooms exposed to harsh sunlight or street visibility. This seemingly small upgrade makes a meaningful difference in the day-to-day lives of the elderly, contributing to better sleep and overall well-being.
With the help of United Fund for Belgium, the Petites Sœurs des Pauvres secured funding for this initiative. The installation of blinds is a practical step toward ensuring every resident feels at ease and protected in their private space. For many seniors, especially those with health challenges or heightened sensitivity to light, this change significantly enhances their comfort and quality of life.
“Residents are happy with this new feature, both in terms of quality and aesthetics. In addition to protecting them from heat and sunlight, it makes their rooms a little more modern and cozy. Residents feel that their opinions have been heard and are comfortable in their rooms, where some of them sometimes spend a lot of time.”
